When can I change my puppy’s diet to a diet suited for adult animals?

Generally it is advised to switch after the biggest growth spurt. The age when switching differs for small and large breeds. Small breeds have the biggest growth spurt around five or six months of age and can be fed regular maintenance food from that moment. For large breed dogs this happens around ten to twelve months of age. Consult your veterinarian when it is the best moment to switch to maintenance food for adult dogs.

Why does my puppy have to get puppy food?

Puppies and young dogs are actively growing. This causes them to have different nutritional requirements than adult dogs. To meet a puppy’s nutritional requirements, it is important to give a puppy special food. Especially puppies of larger breeds are vulnerable when growing. Wrong nutrition can cause skeleton malformations.

For larger breed puppies it is important to get enough food, with limited energy and calcium content. This prevents problems with the development of the skeleton and gastro-intestinal system.

When you would like to feed TROVET, you are feeding a high quality food, with nutrients in optimal proportions for the growth of your puppy to adulthood. Puppy is suited for puppies until 9 to 18 (giant breeds) months of age.

Puppy is a maintenance food, but is nevertheless exclusively available via the veterinarian. This way it is possible for the veterinarian to monitor the growth and development of your puppy.

What can I offer my dog after an elimination period with TROVET Unique Protein?

When the ingredient causing the hypersensitivity reaction is excluded, you can choose to change to a complete wet or dry hypoallergenic variant (Hypoallergenic Lamb, Rabbit, Horse, Venison,  Turkey). Another option is to continue the Unique Protein diet and complete it with a carbohydrate source and a vitamin and mineral supplement (TROVET Balance).

When the hypersensitivity reaction is caused by animal protein, Exclusion is an option. This food contains no animal products. The carbohydrate sources used are; corn, rice, and potato. Soya protein is the main protein source. When hypersensitivity to rice is suspected, you can switch to a hypoallergenic diet with potato. The following hypoallergenic products for dogs contain potato as a carbohydrate source: Hypoallergenic (Venison), Hypoallergenic (Horse), Hypoallergenic (Turkey) and Intestinal.

What is the procedure for finding a hypersensitivity using TROVET Unique Protein?

The diagnosis of food hypersensitivity will be done by your veterinarian with the help of a so called elimination diet. For 6 to 8 weeks your dog or cat has to eat a special composed diet. This diet consists of one (unique) protein source and one carbohydrate source. When the hypersensitivity reaction of your dog or cat decreases during this period, it is safe to say your dog or cat was hypersensitive to a specific ingredient in the previous food.

For these cases TROVET has developed a special PURE MEAT range with unique protein sources, called Unique Protein. These products consist solely of meat and are guaranteed free of additives. Unique Protein is not a complete food.

Unique Protein is available in the following protein sources:

  • Unique Protein (Horse)
  • Unique Protein (Lamb)
  • Unique Protein (Rabbit)
  • Unique Protein (Turkey)
  • Unique Protein (Venison)

Is Intestinal also a hypoallergenic diet?

‘Hypo’ stands for too low, ‘allergenic’ for something that provokes an allergic reaction. The fewer allergy evoking components there are present in the food, the smaller the chance of a hypersensitivity reaction. The protein source in Intestinal for dogs is duck and the carbohydrate source is potato. In Intestinal for cats, the protein source is fish protein hydrolysate (dry food) or cod (wet food) and the carbohydrate source is rice. Intestinal for dogs and cats are both part of the hypoallergenic range.

My dog has a pancreatic disease, can I give it a treat?

The pancreas is an organ that produces digestive enzymes. Dogs with pancreatic diseases (like exocrine pancreatic insufficiency/EPI) are not able to produce sufficient digestive enzymes. This results in a disrupted digestion or ‘maldigestion’. Mainly the digestion of fat is disturbed. Typical symptoms include diarrhoea, weight loss (despite good appetite) and poor body and coat condition.

In case of pancreas problems, it is advised to not give any treats to the animal.

What is hydrolysed protein?

When hydrolysing protein, the protein is made small enough to not be recognised as ‘foreign’ by the body’s immune system. This way the protein causes less to no hypersensitivity reactions. Regulator for dogs and Intestinal for cats (dry food) are examples of foods with hydrolysed protein.

Why does TROVET only have one food for puppies?

Distinctions are made in food for large, medium and small breeds during growth period based on the calcium content. It was found that the adjustments in calcium is less important for small breed puppies.

When formulating Puppy, the nutritional requirements of large and medium breeds were taken into account. This means that the requirements for small breed puppies are indirectly covered. For this reason Puppy is suitable for puppies of large, medium and small breeds.

Is the absorption bag in the Unique Protein Treats immediately dangerous to the health of my dog when eaten?

The contents of the bag ‘Oxygen Absorber’ is not directly dangerous to the health of your dog when the bag is eaten. The content consists of active carbon with iron powder (a type of laxative). After ingestion of the pouch it is advised to let your dog drink more than usual. Of course it is better to prevent your dog from eating the bag.
