Why do I choose for Guinea Pig instead of food from the supermarket/pet store?

Guinea Pig is formulated to focus on the most prominent health problems caused by food. Guinea pigs have the habit of first eating the tasty bits out of mixed food. Because of this they do not always get all the necessary nutrients. By using one type of kibble, the guinea pigs will ingest an even amount of nutrients, preventing nutritional shortcomings.

Guinea Pig contributes to natural dental wear, because of the kibbles’ tough structure. This also helps to prevent sharp edges on molars to a certain level. When developing Guinea Pig, the possible development of kidney problems was also taken into account. The lower phosphorous content prevents deposits of calcium phosphate in the kidneys. The relatively high fibre content in the food stimulates the intestine, creates a feeling of fullness, drives out swallowed hairs and helps to prevent diarrhoea. Keep in mind that the most important food source for your guinea pig is hay. Fresh hay and clean water should be available at all times.

Can I feed my guinea pig rabbit food?

Food for the rabbit is not suited for guinea pigs. Guinea pigs are not able to produce vitamin C. This means that guinea pigs require a higher level of dietary vitamin C than rabbits.

Feeding rabbit food to a guinea pig, for a long period, might cause nutritional deficiencies.

My cat is currently on a hypoallergenic diet, why can I not give him/her something extra?

Your cat is on a hypoallergenic diet because of food hypersensitivity. Your cat is reacting well to the protein or carbohydrate source it is currently eating. When giving your cat something extra you will risk giving something which can trigger a hypersensitivity reaction.

What can I offer my cat after an elimination period with TROVET Unique Protein?

When the ingredient causing the hypersensitivity reaction is excluded, you can choose to change to a complete wet or dry hypoallergenic variant (Hypoallergenic Lamb, Rabbit, Horse, Venison, Turkey). Another option is to continue the Unique Protein diet and complete it with a carbohydrate source* and a vitamin and mineral supplement (TROVET Balance).

* Note: for cats, Unique Protein (Rabbit) | UPR feeding advice is without adding a carbohydrate source. Check the product page for more information.

TROVET has a wide range of hypoallergenic products for cats. What is your advice for using this?

Food hypersensitivity can be caused by multiple factors, such as protein and carbohydrate sources (wheat gluten intolerance), feed mite, preservatives, etc. Food hypersensitivity can be present in more extreme or lesser degrees. Every animal reacts different to the same food.

TROVET has a wide range of products to meet these different needs. This increases the chance that there will be an appropriate food for the individual patient.

The diagnosis of food hypersensitivity will be done by your veterinarian with the help of a so called elimination diet. For 6 to 8 weeks your cat has to eat a special composed diet. This diet consists of one main (animal) protein source and one carbohydrate source*. When during this period the allergic reaction of your cat reduces, your cat was hypersensitive to a specific ingredient in the previous diet.

For these cases TROVET has developed a special PURE MEAT range with unique protein sources, called Unique Protein. These products consist solely of meat and are guaranteed free of additives such as scent, colour, or taste enhancers. Unique Protein is not a complete food.

The choice of the protein source (lamb, rabbit, turkey, venison or horse) will be made in consultation with your veterinarian.

When the ingredient causing the hypersensitivity reaction is excluded, you can choose to change to a complete wet or dry hypoallergenic variant (Hypoallergenic Lamb, Rabbit, Horse, Venison or Turkey).

My cat is overweight and has joint problems, what can I do best?

Cats with joint problems will suffer extra from this when they are overweight. This means it is recommended to let the patients lose weight. Sadly enough this is not always as easy. A joint problem will probably cause the animal to be less active, preventing weight loss. This can result in a vicious circle. A diet targeted at weight loss is Weight & Diabetic. This food has a low fat and energy content and contains extra fibres, which help prolongate satiety after a meal. This diet is enriched with extra vitamins and minerals, in order to meet the daily requirements, despite the reduced food intake.

At the same time as the diet, you can support the joint function of your cat with the help of a supplement. Mobility is a joint supporting supplement. This supplement contains all the necessary substances to support joint repair (glucosaminoglycans or GAGs), namely: glucosamine, chondroitin, keratin, heparin and dermatin sulfate.

My cat is gaining weight or not losing weight, even with a special diet or less food, how is this possible?

When your cat, despite dieting, is not losing weight or even gaining weight, it is important to check if your cat can overeat. Is it possible that your cat is eating more somewhere else (i.e. an outdoor cat). Is clear who of the owners feeds your cat? Is it possible that multiple owners feed your cat, without knowing? Making rules and clear agreements is very important. Another common mistake is that the daily recommended amount is seen as a portion and is fed multiple times a day.
